Austrian Grand Prix History

Set against the magnificent backdrop of the Styrian hills, the picturesque Red Bull Ring made a welcome return to Formula 1 in 2014 as the host of the Formula 1 Grosser Preis von Österreich. This is the circuit’s third stint on the calendar. Its first came in the 1970s on a longer layout of the current track, named the Österreichring. The event was made ever-popular by home hero and three-time World Champion Niki Lauda, whose 1984 win here remains the only home win for an Austrian driver in Formula 1.

About the Red Bull Ring

Situated rurally in the small town of Spielberg, close to Austria's second-largest city of Graz, the Red Bull Ring is nestled among the Styrian mountains. You won’t be able to take advantage of the many nearby ski resorts when F1 visits – but the local area, known as Austria’s ‘green heart’, is a hotspot for hikers at the height of the European summer. Schnitzels and beer are the order of the day and an extended visit to the area allows time to check out its rich history, including an Arnold Schwarzenegger museum!
