Malaysian Grand Prix History
Malaysia first appeared on the Formula 1 calendar in 1999 and ran annually through to the end of Sepang International Circuit’s contract in 2017. Drivers and fans loved the Kuala Lumpur track during its first stint on the calendar, thanks to its unpredictable racing and unpredictable weather. Highlights from the first iteration of the Malaysian Grand Prix included Kimi Raikkonen’s maiden F1 win in 2003, a storm-drenched half-points race won by Jenson Button in 2009 and Sebastian Vettel’s infamously controversial “Multi 21” win in 2013, where he defied team orders to pass teammate Mark Webber and take the victory.

Built over the course of 14 months and opening just months before its debut on the F1 calendar in 1999, Sepang International Circuit is often considered Hermann Tilke’s best work. The track’s mix of long straights and hairpin bends, combined with its sweeping corners and humid conditions has proven the perfect recipe for memorable races. The track has hosted a range of world class motorsports over its history, from single seaters to motorcycles and endurance racing.
